Where oats come from:

Oats are a cereal grain originally from the wide steppes of Asia. They were often dismissed as weeds in the wild. However, the plant’s hardiness and success in cooler, wetter conditions made it a staple in Europe’s temperate regions, including Germany and Scandinavia. This makes them a natural fit for the Great Plains of the United States and Canada.

Elmhurst® uses oats from the Red River Valley of Manitoba, one of Canada’s expansive Prairie Provinces. Canada is the world’s number two oat producer, behind only Russia.

What they’re made of:

Oats may have been undervalued once, but now they are everywhere. Oatmeal, in particular, is more than a staple. Maybe there isn’t much glamor to oats – at least until recently when oat milk became a coffee shop hit. But wherever oats go from here, their value starts with nutrition. The two-punch of whole grain and protein (a somewhat surprising extra) make this one time “weed” quite the unlikely gift of nature. Elmhurst’s oat milk products pour these benefits into a glass, cup, or mug.

Fast facts:

  • Top producers of oats include some of the coldest countries in the world, including Russia, Canada, and Finland. This is because oats are tolerant of late frosts and snows.
  • Oats tend to be planted later in the year than other crops, as they can be harvested in colder weather.
  • The oats we consume in various forms are actually seeds.
  • In Scotland, oats may be referred to as “corn.” This name is often used in Great Britain for the chief cereal crop of a region.
